The Costume designer of the Great Gatsby is Theoni V. Aldredge. Born in Greece, and later immigrated to the United States for scholarship. Her main work is on the American theatre like A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, and Dreamgirls, which included 11 Tony Nominations. As for the Great Gatsby, She won the Oscar and British Academy Award.
The Great Gatsby definitely reflected the 1920s Jazz Age era. During this time, women’s clothes become more power in expressing their modern forms. And also discard the corsets, petticoats, and more, women’s clothes turn to be more lose and shape the flow of the body. Bob hair is popular during that time. Beaded evening wear is common and spreaded.
Reville and Rossiter Evening Gown, 1925-28, is good example of that period. The design of this garment has all the hallmarks of "flapper dress". Deep V-neck, Beaded decorations, dropped waist and more features.
I strongly recommend this movie to other people who have interested in this topic. Even the latest version by Leonardo Dicaprio. The whole setting of movie and story flow show the glamour life in the wall street. After world war I, people feel more liberty and less stressed for their personal life. Especially on their clothes with more creative elements on it. I think this film did pretty good in shaping 1920s Jazz Age fashion era.
